As a wedding planner with over 100 weddings under my belt, I’m thrilled to share insights into the modern rooftop wedding and event venue Above ALX Community. This beautiful rooftop venue, located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, offers 360-degree views of the area and a beautifully designed space. It’s the perfect location for a cocktail reception, wedding, corporate event, or any special occasion. If you’re interested in this venue, read on for the questions we asked the ALX team about its offerings.

1. Who does your venue serve? Is there a type of client/wedding style you love working with the most?

We can accommodate anywhere from 75-300 guests, depending on what ceremony and reception needs you have, but an elegant cocktail reception is where we absolutely shine!

2. How did this venue become a wedding venue? 

We built out the Above ALX Community venue with weddings in mind!  Our CEO Scott Shaw and local writer Kim Olsen wrote and launched a book on elopements called ​​Your Wedding, Your Way: Destination Elopements, Intimate Ceremonies, and Other Nontraditional Nuptials: A Guide for the Modern Couple in 2022, the same year we opened the venue.  Kim naturally consulted on the launch of our Above wedding packages – establishing partnerships with local caterers and vendors and booking some of our first celebrations of love.  

3. Is there a story behind the venue’s history, name, and/or logo?

ALX Community is a collection of dog-friendly spaces for Working, Learning, Meeting, Giving Back, and Celebrating!  What started as a coworking space has grown into so much more, but a dedication to Alexandria and our local community is at the heart of everything we do.  That’s why we’re called ALX Community. When we opened our Atrium location in 2021, we took on the buildout of a brand new rooftop/penthouse event space.  Much thought went into the name, but in the end we landed on Above ALX Community, which feels true to the brand.

4. Do you have a team? If so, introduce them – including yourself! If not, share a little bit about you and your favorite things!

Christopher Djordje, Meeting & Event Sales Director: Christopher is a recent DMV resident from Atlanta, GA.  He’s a lover of fashion, travel, food and senior citizens! He enjoys volunteering at retirement communities to hear life-long wisdom, being creative, and helping people live the life they want.   His friendly and attentive demeanor makes for a warm and thoughtful experience as you plan your special celebration. We also have a team of incredible Event Supervisors who are on-site the day of the event to ensure that you and your guests have the best experience.

5. What sets your venue apart – what’s unique about it?

The views!  Above not only has 360 views of the historic charm of Old Town Alexandria, but you and your guests can also catch glimpses of The Potomac River, The Washington Monument, and National Harbor.  

6. What do most of your couples say is the reason they fell in love with your venue?

The ability to spread out and have a varied guest experience!  Our Above Penthouse is truly an indoor/outdoor space.  Whether your guests want to grab a drink at our indoor wet bar, chat with a friend in the indoor lounge space, or get some fresh air while exploring the sites of the city on the outdoor terrace – they’re free to roam.  You will be the only couple having a wedding in our venue that day, so you and your guests have the space all to yourselves. 

7. What are you most excited about for the future of your venue?

We have hosted engagements, bridal parties, rehearsal dinners, elopements, vowel renewals, wedding ceremonies, and receptions – all with people of different ages, faiths, sexual orientations, and gender identities.  We hope to one day be one of the area’s go-to venues where couples of any kind and stage of love to be comfortably and confidently celebrated.

8. What are some of the best features included in your wedding day packages 

Our couples have the option for an outdoor ceremony, cocktail hour, and/or reception.  In addition to that, they have on-site parking, accommodations for handicapped guests, and dedicated staff to assist their coordinator in running a smooth event.  We also have partnerships with local caterers and vendors who know and love our space – ensuring a seamless experience.

9. What’s your favorite story of a memorable moment that happened at your venue? 

Last year, we were honored to offer the Penthouse space for an outdoor rooftop wedding ceremony for Kyra Ketch and the love of her life Courtney Piesco.  Kyra was on our Community Team and played an integral role in opening Above ALX Community, so it was such a full-circle moment for her to use the venue for her special day.  We were honored to host them, and it will always be one of our favorite weddings.  Our COO Kelly Grant called it, “one of the best days of my life.”

10. What is one thing you want people to know about your venue?

We’re dog-friendly – just like our workspaces!  Alexandria is consistently voted one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country, and your best friend can’t miss your special day.

11. Any advice for brides who are looking for a venue? 

Venues are just as important to your guests as they are to you!  Picture in your mind the experience you want your guests to have, and choose your venue based on that.  If you want space for your guests to move around and have some freedom to mix and mingle and explore the surrounding sites, we’re a great fit.  If you want a really elevated, formal affair, a venue with an incredible ballroom space might be a better fit.
